Highlights

This tour starts at 4:00pm for a reason. As the sun begins to set, Ameyoko transforms. The daytime market starts to wind down while the standing bars, seafood restaurants and traditional izakayas come alive with locals finishing work and catching up over a drink or two. This is when the neighbourhood is at its absolute best.

Over four relaxed hours, we'll visit around nine carefully selected stops, tasting everything from seasonal Japanese fruit and beautifully prepared sashimi to fresh oysters, takoyaki, fresh tempura, izakaya favourites and a traditional Japanese dessert.

Along the way, we'll step away from the bustling market for a visit to a peaceful local temple, learning about Japanese culture, Buddhism and Shinto before diving back into the energy of Ameyoko.

Come hungry, you'll leave not just full, but with a genuine appreciation for Japanese food, culture and everyday life!

Tour Itinerary

1. Fresh Seasonal Fruit

We'll kick things off with a selection of fresh seasonal fruit, a light and refreshing introduction to Japan's incredible produce and one of the country's most unique food cultures.

2. Sashimi Izakaya

Next, we'll enjoy beautifully prepared sashimi, with adventurous guests also having the option to try basashi (horse sashimi). It's the perfect introduction to Japan's world-famous seafood culture.

3. Fresh Oysters

We'll continue with fresh oysters sourced from some of Japan's most famous oyster-producing regions. Big, fresh and incredibly flavourful, they're a must-try for seafood lovers.

4. Tachinomi (Standing Bar)

We'll wander past one of Ameyoko's traditional standing bars and, if there's space, stop for a quick drink while experiencing one of Japan's favourite after-work traditions.

5. Takoyaki

Fresh off the grill, we'll enjoy one of Osaka's most famous street foods. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and usually much hotter than they look!

6. Marishiten Tokudaiji Temple

We'll step away from the busy market for a moment to visit one of Ueno's hidden temples, offering a peaceful contrast and a glimpse into Japan's spiritual side.

7. Yakitori Izakaya

We'll settle in for a relaxed sit-down dinner featuring yakiton, nikomi and a selection of classic izakaya dishes. This is where you'll experience Japanese dining culture the way locals do.

8. Tempura Izakaya

We'll finish the savoury part of the evening with freshly prepared tempura, choosing from a variety of seafood and seasonal vegetables cooked to crispy perfection.

9. Traditional Japanese Dessert

We'll wrap up the evening at one of Ueno's most famous dessert shops, where you can choose from a range of traditional Japanese sweets and finish the tour on a sweet note.

This isn’t a random walk through Ameyoko.

Every venue on this tour has been personally selected for its quality, authenticity and value for money.

Rather than following social media trends or tourist hotspots, we've built this experience around places we'd happily take our own friends and family.

Note: Food stops may vary slightly depending on the day, season, weather, and stall availability.

Meet Your Guide

I'm half Australian and half Japanese, and after spending over ten years working as a sparky in Australia, and running my own Japanese street food business on the side, I eventually decided to return to Japan to reconnect with my heritage and build something more meaningful.

Today, I spend my time introducing travellers to the parts of Tokyo I genuinely love, sharing not only incredible food, but also the history, traditions and everyday culture that make Japan such an unforgettable place to explore.

My goal isn't simply to feed you—it's to help you leave Japan feeling more confident, more connected, and with a deeper appreciation for the country than when you arrived.
