Highlights

This is not a bus tour nor is it standing behind a flag while somebody recites facts from a script.

These experiences are for travellers who want to get outside, explore Japan's incredible natural, or urban, landscapes, and experience a side of the country far beyond the usual big-city tourist attractions.

Some guests are looking for a serious physical challenge. Others simply want to spend a relaxing day in nature away from the crowds.

I live and breathe Japan's outdoors, so you don't need to worry about route planning, navigation, language barriers, or logistics. I'll make sure the day runs smoothly, so all you have to do is pick your adventure!

Suggested Experiences

Option 1: Mount Odake Hike or Trail Run

One of my favourite day hikes near Tokyo.

Located in the Okutama mountain region, this experience combines forest trails, ridgeline hiking, incredible mountain scenery, and on clear days, THE MOST spectacular views of Mount Fuji.

The full loop is a touch under 20 kilometres and usually takes around five to six hours at a standard hiking pace.

Along the way we'll pass through beautiful mountain terrain, stop for lunch, and, during warmer months, there are opportunities to cool off in the water!

For experienced runners looking for a challenge, we can also tackle the route as a trail run. I normally complete the course in around three and a half hours, although sections are technical and involve both running and hiking.

Perfect for travellers wanting a proper mountain adventure without needing multiple days away from Tokyo.

There are a handful of other incredible hikes and trail runs near Tokyo, many with stunning views of Mount Fuji. If you're looking for something a little different, don't hesitate to get in touch via email or the contact form below!

Option 2: Mount Fuji Summit Experience

The ultimate Japanese mountain experience!

Together, we'll climb Japan's most iconic mountain and stand on the summit of Mount Fuji.

There are two ways to experience this adventure.

The first is a single-day summit push, starting early and from the first Mount Fuji torii gate in Fujiyoshida, and reaching the top in one incredible day.

The second is the classic overnight ascent, staying in a mountain hut around 8th or 9th station, before making the final climb to the summit for an unforgettable sunrise above the clouds.

I've completed both approaches multiple times and continue to climb and race on Mount Fuji every season, so I'll be there to guide and support you every step of the way.

Whether your goal is to witness one of the most spectacular sunrises in Japan, push yourself physically, or tick off a once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list achievement, climbing Mount Fuji is an experience you'll never forget.

Option 3: Run the Yamanote Line

One of the most unique adventures you can do in Tokyo.

Instead of exploring Tokyo by train, we'll run around it!

The Yamanote Line loops through many of Tokyo's most famous districts, including Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, Ueno, Akihabara, Tokyo Station, and countless neighbourhoods in between.

Covering approximately 40 to 45 kilometres depending on the route, this experience combines endurance, sightseeing, local culture, and plenty of laughs along the way.

We'll stop for food, drinks, photos, and breaks whenever needed. I typically organise three 30-minute sit-down breaks throughout the day, and I'll also carry a few snacks and sweet treats to keep us fuelled between stops. The last time I ran the full loop, it took just over seven hours, with around five hours actually spent running.

You don't need to be an elite runner, but a reasonable level of fitness certainly helps.

This is a fantastic challenge for travellers looking for something completely different from the typical Tokyo experience.

Tailor The Adventure to You

Every outdoor experience can be customised depending on your interests, fitness level, and goals.

Want to hike rather than run? Easy.

Want to train for a race while visiting Japan? Let's do it.

Interested in trail running, mountain summits, waterfalls, forest walks, swimming holes, ridgeline traverses, sunrise hikes, or multi-day adventures? We can build something around that.

Some guests simply want to spend a day outdoors and see a different side of Japan. Others arrive with ambitious goals and want a genuine challenge. Either way, we'll create something memorable.

More than anything, these experiences are about sharing my favourite places in Japan with good people.

Expect plenty of stories, laughs, encouragement, local knowledge, and a genuine sense of adventure.

Meet Your Guide

I'm half Australian and half Japanese, and while many people know me through food and cultural tourism, my passions also include mountain adventures and endurance sports!

I've summited Mount Fuji multiple times, participated in trail running races throughout Japan, and spend much of my free time hiking and exploring the mountains and rural communities around Tokyo.

For me, Japan's outdoor spaces are just as exciting and unique as its food, culture, and history. And, these experiences allow me to share that side of Japan with travellers who want something a little different!
