Sunday Supper: The Boys Were Running Amok

After seven days of solid work, Sunday evening turned into one of those unplanned, slightly chaotic nights that somehow ends up being exactly what you needed.
Seven Days In, Sunday Finally Arrives
After working for seven days in a row, Sebastian and I finally hit Sunday afternoon and exhaled.
We were in our home theatre, kicking back, when the thought popped into my head. Maybe we make something nice for dinner. Something comforting. Something Japanese.
I cook all our "locked-in" meals at home, but tonight, a comforting Japanese curry felt like the right move. It had been snowing all morning and we'd been out of the house most of day finalsing some tour routing. So staying in with a nice homecooked meal instead of eating meal prep out of containers definitely felt like the right thing to do.
At 6 pm, giddy with school-boy excitement, we committed.
Chai, A Tiny Bar, and a Very Good Detour
We headed down the road to grab the curry ingredients, and on that short walk I noticed the tiny hole-in-the-wall chai place was open. It's something we've been keen on trying for a couple months now!
We popped in for a look and sure enough they were open for business! I went their classic chai masala and Sebastian ordered a dark rum chai, which smelled fkn amazing.
The place itself is tiny. A four-person bar with a lovely Japanese woman mixing drinks.
We sat there huddled around our chais for half an hour, yarning and easing into the night. It was such a good accidental detour, and a perfect way to kick off our Sunday evening of delights lol.
Japanese Curry and Going All In at FamilyMart
After chai, we cruised another hundred metres down the road, and grabbed all the curry ingredients.
Back home, I chopped vegetables, prepped the meat, and got everything into the pot. Once the curry was simmering or boiling or doing whatever curry does, we decided to take things up a notch.
FamilyMart.
And not just a quick in-and-out. A proper look around.
Our local FamilyMart is literally next door, which is dangerous information to live with. We checked out all the sweets, chippies, chocolates, and random Japanese snacks.
We walked out with six different packets of bits and pieces.
As usual, we went all in.
We came back home, checked on the curry, and filmed ourselves eating snacks for a bit. Or maybe it was a long bit. Hard to say.
We bounced between snacking, stirring the curry, and popping in and out of our “home theatre.” Couple boys just having fun.
The Home Theatre, Delayed Dinner, and Zero Regrets
When I say home theatre, I mean an $80 projector I bought online, projecting onto the back of an old couch. It makes us feel wealthy but more importantly, it works.
We watched Netflix, stirred the curry, grabbed more snacks, and repeated the cycle. At one point the gas cut out and delayed dinner by another twenty or thirty minutes, which was totally fine because it meant more snacks.
By the time the curry was finally ready, it was around 9 pm. A full three hours after deciding to make a simple Sunday supper lol.
Pork belly. Chicken thigh. Rich Japanese curry. Fresh tomatoes on the side. Exactly what we wanted.
We parked ourselves back in front of the projector, polished off the remaining snacks, and leaned fully into the chaos of the evening.
If there’s a motto here, it’s pretty simple.
If I’m not having fun, I’m not doing it.
And this was a lot of fun.
Hopefully you enjoy watching the little clips from our evening and reading this as much as we enjoyed living it.
