Tour Details
Discover the temples, traditions, and timeless charm of Tokyo’s old quarter.
Step away from the crowds and into a slower, more personal side of Tokyo.
Narrow backstreets, old wooden houses, and cats lounging in the sun. Yanaka is where old Tokyo still lives.
This walking tour is about wandering, listening, and feeling the rhythm of daily life in a neighbourhood that has barely changed.
Tour Itinerary
1. Shimogoindenhashi Bridge
We begin near the bridge as trains rush past, carrying millions of commuters across Tokyo each day. Just steps away, Yanaka slows everything down.
2. Tennō-ji Temple
A historic Buddhist temple known for its peaceful grounds and striking bronze Buddha statue. It’s a quiet place that reflects the spiritual simplicity of the area.
3. Yanaka Cemetery
More than just a cemetery, this is one of Tokyo’s most atmospheric walking paths. Wide lanes, seasonal trees, and the graves of artists, writers, and historical figures tell stories of the city’s past.
4. Ueno Sakuragi Atari
A beautifully restored cluster of traditional buildings now home to small shops and cafes. It’s a perfect example of how old structures are being thoughtfully reused in modern Tokyo.
5. The Himalayan Cedar Tree
A local landmark and a favourite Yanaka meeting point. This towering tree has watched over the neighbourhood for generations and adds to the area’s timeless feel.
6. Enju-ji Temple
A small, tucked-away temple that many visitors miss. Simple, peaceful, and deeply local, it offers a moment of quiet reflection along the walk.
7. Nezu Shrine
One of Tokyo’s oldest and most beautiful Shinto shrines. Famous for its winding path of red torii gates, Nezu Shrine feels both grand and intimate at the same time. I’ll explain the rituals, symbolism, and why this shrine is still deeply loved by locals.
8. Hebimichi (“Snake Path”)
A narrow, winding alley built along an old stream. Its unusual shape gives it a unique character and a glimpse into how Tokyo’s landscape has evolved over time.
9. Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street
We finish on Yanaka Ginza, a nostalgic local shopping street filled with street food, small family-run shops, and friendly neighbourhood energy. It’s a great place to grab a snack, take photos, and soak in the atmosphere.
